Willoughby Council and the RTA are sponsoring the completion of a 55 meter mural along the Gore Hill Cycle track. Paint is sponsored by Dulux and materials by Bunnings Artamon.
This section of wall along the cycle track is plagued by constant graffiti and ‘TAGS’ removing graffiti is an important step in helping to break the cycle of it occurring. If graffiti is left for any period of time it increases the chance of other graffiti occurring. By removing it quickly, it sends a message to the offender that the community cares and that it will not be tolerated. Also, the quicker it is removed, the easier it comes off. Another benefit of rapidly removing graffiti is the community’s perception. Graffiti vandalism detracts from the visual image and creates a feeling of an unsafe community. Public murals have shown to decrease the incidence of graffiti gain ownership and a sense of purpose to the wall.
The Gore Hill Mural is to be a community driven artwork, designed and executed by Karen Bessell at Think Art, but with inclusion and ideas generated from working collaboratively with the youth in Willoughby City. Open workshops and a Youth Art competition provided the platform to gain the creative ideas and artistic expression of the children.
